Rio Grand turkeys inhabit the wide-open, arid spaces of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Second only to the eastern in population, Rios number over 600,000 birds and have been transplanted far beyond their home to the pacific northwest and Hawaii. Rios are halfway in between Easterns and Western turkeys in appearance. In Kansas especially, where Easterns' and Rios' ranges overlap, there is a large population of Rio/Easter hybrids. Rios' weigh between 10 - 20 pounds. Roost: primarily in tall cottonwoods, but in the absence of suitable trees can be found on power lines and windmill towers.
