Merriam's Turkey inhabits the ponderosa pines of the mountainous west. Like Elk and Mule Deer, Merriam's Turkeys will migrate from high country to low with the onset of winter, returning to higher elevations in the spring. Nearly as big as eastern wild turkeys, Merriam's are easily distinguished by their white edged fans and rump feathers. Historically found in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, the Merriam has adapted to the Northern mountain states as well as the prairies of South Dakota and Nebraska and parts of the Pacific Northwest. May migrate 30 - 40 miles in spring Population- approx. 200,000 Roost- pines preferred Special Caution- if sabbing a hunt for this turkey, avoid wearing any white (including undergarments) Info from the hunters:
