Hunted to Extinction
"Humans are today [. . .] thought to be driving
extinctions on a bigger scale than the one that killed off the dinosaurs"
- Allana Mitchell (Journalist for
CDNN reporting on an article in
Journal Science by Paleobiologist John Alroy) 4.
These are just a few of the species
eliminated or near elimination because of hunters. Does this mean that today's
hunters are capable of this? As a worldwide whole, yes hunters are a detriment.
In America it is likely not to be so, but to say that hunters have hunted both
now and in the past with no negative effects on their game species ignores not
only past damages, but the damage that can occur in the future.
The sources are numbered because I
felt to include the authors name may invite confusion as to whether it is part
of the name for the animal listed. The complete works cited can be found at the
bottom of the page numerically arranged.
